In the 14th century John de Clapham, who took his surname from the village, was a supporter of the Earl of Warwick and lived at Clapdale Castle. This was more of a fortified manor house, but now is known as Clapdale Farm. According to Coxe, this was haunted by the ghost of Dame Alice Kytell, who was believed by some to be a witch.

The Goat Gap Inn is now a private dwelling. In its time as an inn, had a tradition of being a haunted hostelry. Phenomena that were reported included the apparition of a drover wearing a cloth-cap, taps turning on, childrens voices singing.
